Peppermint oil helps heal cracked lips, and this is the reason why this oil is an active ingredient in chapsticks and lip glosses. The oil has a soothing effect (because of menthol that’s present in it), and so can be used on wind-chapped or sun-burnt lip as it will give a cooling and refreshing effect on the skin.
Peppermint oil also functions as a topical analgesic while it medicates. Everyone knows of the soothing, cooling effect of applying peppermint oil to the skin. And nothing could feel better on your dry, cracked, irritated lips. Besides, it tastes good, too!
Although it feels like that cooling, tingling sensation is doing something beneficial—perhaps even powerful—to your lips, it’s actually sacrificing the outer layer that protects them from the outside elements. And when it comes to compromised winter skin, you want to repair and replenish with nourishing ingredients such as rich oils and even shea butters.
Shea butter: It works as an emollient that softens and hydrates skin. Because it contains several types of fatty acids including lineoleic, oleic, palmitic and stearic acids that improve the skin’s natural barrier, shea butter also protects skin from damage from the environment like pollutants.
Vitamin E: Topical vitamin E oil can be used to relieve chapped, dry lips. Since vitamin E promotes cell turnover and regeneration, using it on dry lips brings new cells to the surface faster. The thick and oily consistency of vitamin E oil can also prevent further irritation.
Coconut oil: The lauric acid in coconut oil has nourishing properties that seep into your skin. Some coconut oils absorb quickly, providing moisture to heal dry, chapped lips. Keep in mind that coconut oil can only do so much. You’ll want to determine the cause of your chapped lips so you can prevent it again in the future.
Peppermint essential oil: Peppermint oil helps heal cracked lips, and this is the reason why this oil is an active ingredient in chapsticks and lip glosses. The oil has a soothing effect (because of menthol that’s present in it), and so can be used on wind-chapped or sun-burnt lip as it will give a cooling and refreshing effect on the skin.
Bee’s wax: Beeswax contains natural emulsifiers that help retain moisture, making it a great ingredient for dry, chapped lips. Protects lips from UV rays, much like how sunblock protects your skin, beeswax can protect your lips from harmful UV rays.
Uncap the container. If the balm is in a tube, you only need to raise it about a half centimeter.
